Utah is known as “The Beehive State,” and businesses continue to name themselves after the antique skep, many of them without knowing what a bee skep is, or where the bees are. The state adopted the beehive as its official symbol in 1959, designated the honeybee as the state insect, and even named the “beehive cluster” as the state’s astronomical symbol. When Utah territory became a state in 1896, it retained the beehive symbol in its state seal and on its flag. “It lost some of its religious connections but the community connotations continued.” The beehive still serves as the logo of some Church-related organizations, but it’s come to symbolize the whole state of Utah. What about drones? What about the queen bee? “The meaning of the beehive shifted a little as Brigham Young’s Deseret became a territory, then a state,” says Staker. Of course, you can’t go too far with the etymological comparison or you raise awkward implications. … It is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation.” It was a representation of a Golden Beehive, with all the bees at work.” On October 11, 1881, an article in The Deseret News explained the symbolism: “The hive and honey bees form our communal coat of arms. And it was simple, unostentatious and it fitted like a glove. Mark Twain commented on the Utah beehive symbol in his book on the 1860s American West, Roughing It, saying, “The Mormon crest was easy. Newell posts, doorknobs, windows and all bore the emblem of a beehive. Notably, on the interior and exterior of the Salt Lake Temple and, famously, on Brigham Young’s own Beehive House, which is crowned with a carved bee skep. Images of bees and beehives-the traditional skep, five of which the Mormons brought with them on their trek-were used in much early church construction embellishments. When Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints arrived in Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, Young chose the name “Deseret” for their new home, and the beehive as its emblem, symbolizing the kind of cooperative work that would be required to make the desert bloom. They brought with them the “Deseret” which means “honey bee” in the nomenclature of The Book of Mormon According to The Book of Mormon, the Jaredites made a miraculous 344-day voyage across the ocean to North America. The Book of Ether in The Book of Mormon (books within books) tells the story of the Jaredites, a tribe that lived at the time of the Tower of Babel in the Old Testament. Many early Mormons were also Masons, including one particularly important Mason/Mormon: Joseph Smith. “Many of the founding fathers were Masons, and America had become the new ‘promised land’ of opportunity,” says Staker. Freemasons also used the bee and beehive as symbols of cooperative work, and the images are found in early American art and literature. So, they incorporated bees and the cooperative life of the hive into early Christian symbolism,” explains Staker. “The European monks whose scriptoria kept The Bible in print before Gutenberg came along had no way of knowing that Biblical honey was most likely date honey and had nothing to do with bees. “The Bible refers to the ‘Promised Land’ as ‘the land of milk and honey.'” Of course, there were no honeybees in the ancient Middle East. “The beehive has been used as a symbol for thousands of years,” according to historian Mark Staker, an expert on early Mormon anthropology at the LDS Church’s Family History Center. No wonder visitors ask, “Where are the bees?” But I’m surprised how few native and resident Utahns even know the reason Utah is called “ The Beehive State.” It has nothing to do with the proliferation of Apis mellifera, the scientific name for the western honey bee. There’s a beehive fountain in front of the Brigham Young Academy the Beehive Society is the oldest honor society on the University of Utah campus and each summer Salt Lake magazine rolls out accolades in our Best of the Beehive issue. Insurance companies, scooter sellers, clothing stores-all use the logo of a beehive, which is actually a coiled straw dome, called a skep, that hasn’t been used to house bees for over 100 years. Dozens of Salt Lake businesses begin their name with “beehive” - Beehive Bail Bonds, Beehive Auto, Beehive Elementary School, Beehive Credit Union, Beehive Title Insurance, Beehive Glass. They’re everywhere-on the state highway signs, on the Capitol building, on the state flag, on manhole covers.

The village was renamed “Namo Buddha” which means “Hommage to Buddha”. Some 3500 years later, the Gautam Buddha walked three times around the stupa, then declared that he was the reincarnation of Mahasattva. The bones – all that remained of him – were buried under a stupa at the nearby village. Prince Sattva (rather generously, one would think!) offered the tigress his blood and flesh so that she and the cubs might survive. She was trying to nurse five cubs, but was starving and about to die. It was near here, so the story goes, that a prince by the name of Mahasattva, was out walking with his two brothers when he came across a tigress. Namo Buddha is one of the most important Buddhist religious sites in Nepal. It sits at 1738 meters, at the top of Gandha Malla Hill above the Namo Buddha Stupa, treating the visitor to glorious sunrises, sunsets, and views over the foothills and the snow-capped Himalaya. Even in a duel, if you can get your artifact creatures to deal damage at different times, such as by giving some of them first strike or double strike, you’ll get two corresponding card-draw triggers.A place for Limited Resources, Constructed Resources and One-For-One listeners to gather and talk about the podcasts, Limited, Constructed, value and more. You can do the same in a free-for-all multiplayer game by attacking two different players. This means that if you attack with two Thopters, you can assign one Thopter’s damage to Head A, assign the other’s damage to Head B, and draw two cards. For example, in Two-Headed Giant (which you may have played at your last prerelease), although both heads share a life total, they’re still two separate players. Worry not, though, for there are ways around this card-drawing restriction… such as by spying on multiple opponents at once. Rather, the Network will trigger once for each time that “one or more artifact creatures you control deal combat damage to a player…” and since all attacking creatures deal combat damage at the same time, no matter whether you’re attacking with one, two, or twenty Thopters, you’re only going to get to draw one card off spying on your opponent. As great as it would be if the Network upgraded all your Thopters into Thieving Magpies, that’s sadly not the case. That second ability warrants further investigation, though. What happens when you get a bunch of Thopter tokens together? Why, they form a Thopter Spy Network, of course! Although it’s not an artifact itself, this card is great at supporting artifacts, being able to deploy a new addition to your ranks each turn (assuming you already have one…and if you’re playing the Network in your deck, you do have one, don’t you?), and also drawing you a bunch of cards. This is a speedy and powerful little chip and a real testament to what kind of power you can stick onto a small PCB. While you can make a little money with this, you’re obviously going to have to connect a few of these together and have free electricity to make any sort of dent into the initial $200 investment. Home mining, at this point, is more about the experience of mining than any real money making. Given the cost of electricity and the constant rise in the bitcoin mining difficulty rate, this will eventually fall until 11 GH/s is a paltry speed. You’ll notice that at that speed we would see about 0.018 BTC per month, or about $10. This enough to make about $150 a year at this current difficulty and bitcoin price. How does it perform? Well, with the fan pointed directly at it and the hub powered on, I consistently saw 12GH/s. This should get you the latest version of cgminer. Ln -s /home/minepeon/cgminer-4.3.2/cgminer cgminer configure -enable-icarus -enable-bitfury Once you’ve put Minepeon on an SD card and booted up your Raspberry Pi, you need to download and compile cgminer for your environment. I had to recompile it to work with the current version of Minepeon. To run the chip with Raspberry Pi Minepeon installation I had to install and recompile cgminer 4.3.2, the latest version of a standalone mining app that runs on most platforms. You can learn how to install it onto an SD card here. It is one of the simplest ways to turn your Raspberry Pi into a real mining rig and is very cool. To mine I used a Raspberry Pi with a USB card onto which I installed Minepeon, a free mining platform that supports multiple types of ASIC miners. The device requires a 5V USB hub (Belkin makes a few good ones) and a separate fan. It looks like an overgrown thumb drive with exposed innards, which should give owners of inquisitive cats pause. On one side are the six ASICs and on the other side is a large, passive heatsink. I ran a collection of three 1 GH/s ASICs and got about $1 a month.Ī unit arrived from Asicrunner and I unwrapped the single chip and checked it out. Could you mine with the smaller ASICs? Sure, but you’d essentially be burning money in a tiny bonfire. At this point these older ASICs cost about $12 while this model costs $200. Up until the HexFury, most USB miners of this type could run at 2 GH/s per second or slower, enough to mine a few dollars a year. The ASICs, in this case, are chips that do one thing – mine bitcoin – and they do it very well. The HexFury is a USB mining rig with six small ASICs made by a company called Bitfury. With that in mind, then, I decided to plug in a HexFury 11 gigahash/second USB miner, one of the last powerful USB miners that can actually make you a few dollars a month.įirst, let’s understand what this thing is. Sure you can make a little and you definitely help out the bitcoin network by processing the hashes that make up bitcoin transactions, but plugging in your own hardware usually means huge electricity bills and a trickle of BTC so slow that you barely make back your investment. At this point, unless you steal power from the electrical grid in some weird squat or you have your own hydroelectric plant, home bitcoin mining is a sucker’s game. Its marked absorbency having been noted, however, led to its subsequently being produced and used as blotting paper, replacing sand, which was the material that had been used for absorbing superficial wet ink. Subsequently, someone tried to write on a piece of this discarded "scrap" paper and found that it rapidly absorbed any ink applied, making it unusable for writing. It is reported that a Berkshire (England) paper mill worker failed to add sizing to a batch of paper that was being produced.
